The Food of Love…..

010303balconycwtch-001To all the hopeless Romantics out there –

here’s wishing you a very happy St Valentine’s Day; & if you haven’t already found the Love of your Life, may today grant you your heart’s desire.

And if you’re looking to woo that ‘special someone’ but are stuck for ideas, please refer to today’s post on our ‘Lovespoon’ Blog ( as I’ve posted up a selection of sumptuously sexy recipes for a delicious Valentine’s Dinner for two.  Enjoy…..!

Incidentally the photo on the left was taken on our Wedding Day, at (what was) the beautiful Wyck Hill House, a country house hotel in the Cotswolds not far from where we used to live.

Exactly a year after we married it was purchased by a London hotel magnate, who failed to recognise the uniqueness of this beautiful old property & immediately set about modernising it; ripping out the beautiful old ‘Hunting Pink’  chintz bar & replacing it with faceless leather sofas, white walls, bare mirrors & black-&-white modern prints.  And that was just for starters….a  modern wing of equally faceless bedrooms, & a spa, were added; & the elegant promotional material was changed from the rich hues of honeyed stone for which House is famous, to a dull-but-trendy black-&-white brochure peppered with poor grammar.

Sadly, after a couple of return visits we conceded that almost all of the original charm had been leached from what was once a place of captivating traditional Cotswold Country House history; & we decided that to go back would break our hearts as we could no longer relive those wonderful memories of our special day in such a radically ruined environment.

It subsequently didn’t come as a surprise to be told by friends at Christmas, that the property is now in receivership….sadly, I fear for its’ very uncertain future.

… and there I was thinking that was just you on your balcony before milking the goats on any old day of the week.

The takeover of old British pubs/hotels into “chain stores” is something that upsets me every single time I go back. I grew up near a market town and, the last time I returned, one absolute gem had become a McDonalds – I really nearly cried.
