The Icing on the (Mountainous) Cake

tonyportrait-001Today was my wonderful husband’s ’21st’ birthday (again!!);

thanks to all for their warm greetings in wishing him a Very Happy Birthday (or ‘Penblywydd Hapus’, in Welsh).

He was absent for much of the day, flying;  whilst I tackled the annual income tax returns (due on 31st January, ooerr), bundled everything together & delivered it all to our accountant.

In between wrestling with frustrating paperwork I put a new toy into the goat kids’ Playpen: a small cable reel, which the girls absolutely loved; playing ‘King of the Castle’ by leaping on & off it whilst anyone who wasn’t Top Goat ran round & round the pen, leaping, twisting & bucking in delight.  I could easily have watched them for hours; but alas, there was work to be done…..with Lloyd hard at work trimming some of the the hedgerows, taking advantage of the frost-hardened ground to help keep the farm neat & tidy (we never have all of them done simultaneously in order to provide food & shelter for the rich diversity of wild birds & animals who share the farm with us).

To save money, fuel & the environment I always try to combine journeys & so was out for much of the afternoon running errands.  I was surprised to find that the light dusting of snow visible on the Frenni Mountains – like icing sugar on Tony’s birthday cake – had fallen more widely than expected.  Only a few grains of snow had dusted our farmyard; but towards the top of the hill on the Northeast-facing slopes there was a distinct covering; & the full glory of the Long Mountain & Mynydd Bach in the Preselis was revealed in a blanket of glittering white.  Even the ponies were high-spirited in the frozen air, frisking around the field with tails aloft & nostrils snorting; prancing, dancing, bucking & rearing as they chased each other in play.  And at suppertime, all the animals were certainly glad of the warming sugar beet ‘porridge’ mixed in with their concentrates.

So, especially for Tony on his birthday, here’s a picture from our St David’s Day wedding breakfast of his little snowman (for those who don’t know the story, we fell in love whilst building a snowman for RAF Lyneham’s Winter Ball).  Incidentally I think it was jolly decent of Barack Obama to arrange to be inaugurated today to make Tony’s day even more memorable….what a lovely gesture!

    Happy Birthday! I keep bumping into lots of January birthday souls – have a great day and an even better year.

  2. Penblywdd Hapus Tony!

    Funny, I was just walking along our airport runway today and thinking about you. We’ve had incredible winds lately and consequently some of the planes have not been able to get in. I was looking at the narrow valley and wondering what you’d think about flying in here (still fantasizing you’ll drop in with Jo for a visit!). Have a good un.

    Happy Birthday. I didn’t know about the snowman – I think that’s cute.

    You mentioned the snow in the mountains and I’m wondering what it’s like now?! I imagine you could build a whole army of snowmen.

    Thankfully (& amazingly) we’ve no snow as yet; I had a busy day yesterday making sure animal feed & firewood stocks were replenished; that spades were readily available; & that torches were fully charged. It’s briskly cold & many of the pipes have frozen; however so far, there has only been the odd flurry here. But it’s growing increasingly dark as the cloud cover increases, so I suspect it’s only a matter of time….in fact the first few flakes are whirling past the window….

    You never know Kristeva, one of these days we’ll stop by for a ‘flying visit’! Not sure whether your runway would take an Airbus though!!
